Paul Backman

I grew up in the Barossa Valley, South Australia and studied music at Nuriootpa High school. I quickly became involved with the school ensembles and completed year 12 solo performance and musicianship. I also become involved in the brass band tradition in the Barossa Valley, where I Joined ‘Marananga Brass Band’ and Later the ‘Tanunda Town Band’. Through this I was exposed to playing a variety of styles and percussion instrument such as; Drumkit, Timpani, Xylophone, Glockenspiel and Multiple Percussion.

This experience lead me to further my study and moving to Adelaide in 2002 I undertook a Bachelor of music (classical Percussion), which was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I have done musically! I also later completed my diploma in Education in 2009

During this period I also joined many different bands and ensembles around Adelaide, Notably The ‘John Reynold Raiders Drumline’, Contemporary Rock group ‘Quiet Child’, the Frank Zappa tribute band ‘Lather’ as well as playing in many cover bands. I also did a lot work in musical theatre playing in the pit orchestras for many productions. Some of the Company I was involved with were ‘Gilbert and Sullivan society, State theatre company, Therry Drama society, The Hills Theatre Group’ , ‘Northern Light theatre company.

My Teaching experiences started in 2001 where I worked for a local private music school ‘Rhythm and Reason’ in Gawler. From there I taught many years in both public and private schools such as; Concordia College, Trinity College, Ardtonish Primary School, Birdwood High School, St Peters Girl and Cross Way Lutheran School

In 2013 I joined the interactive children’s band ‘Music in Fun’ and had an amazing experience touring metropolitan and regional S.A. performing, educating and inspiring children with music.

Falling in Love the west coast I moved to Port Lincoln in 2014. I hope to contribute to the already wonderful music community locally and inspire the next generation!
